Meningitis ACWY (Hajj & Umrah)
The MenACWY vaccination required for Hajj and Umrah pilgrims, with the ICVP certificate needed for entry to Saudi Arabia.
Why are vaccinations required for Hajj and Umrah?
Every year, millions of pilgrims travel to Saudi Arabia for Hajj and Umrah. The large gatherings increase the risk of certain infectious diseases spreading between pilgrims from around the world. To help protect pilgrims and public health, the Saudi Arabian Ministry of Health requires proof of vaccination against meningococcal disease for those travelling for Hajj or Umrah.
What is meningococcal disease?
Meningococcal disease is a serious bacterial infection caused by Neisseria meningitidis. It can lead to meningitis (infection of the lining of the brain and spinal cord) and septicaemia (blood poisoning). These conditions can develop rapidly and require urgent medical treatment.
How is meningococcal disease spread?
The infection spreads through close contact with an infected person, including:
- Coughing and sneezing.
- Kissing.
- Sharing drinks, eating utensils, or cigarettes.
- Prolonged close contact in crowded environments.
Symptoms
Symptoms can develop suddenly and may include:
- High fever.
- Severe headache.
- Stiff neck.
- Nausea and vomiting.
- Sensitivity to light.
- Confusion or drowsiness.
- A rash that does not fade when pressed with a glass.
Seek urgent medical attention if you or someone you are travelling with develops these symptoms.
Meningococcal ACWY vaccine
The MenACWY vaccine helps protect against four strains of meningococcal bacteria (A, C, W and Y). It is a mandatory requirement for pilgrims travelling to Saudi Arabia for Hajj or Umrah.
How is the vaccine given?
- The vaccine is given as a single injection into the upper arm.
- A single dose provides protection against meningococcal groups A, C, W and Y.
- To meet the current Saudi Arabian entry requirements, the vaccine should be administered at least 10 days before arrival in Saudi Arabia.
- If you have previously received a MenACWY vaccine, our pharmacist will review your vaccination history to determine whether a booster is required.
Who can receive the vaccine?
The MenACWY vaccine is suitable for adults and children aged 12 months and over. During your appointment, our pharmacist will review your travel plans and vaccination history to ensure you meet the current entry requirements for Saudi Arabia.
Who should receive the vaccine?
The MenACWY vaccine is recommended for:
- Anyone travelling to Saudi Arabia for Hajj.
- Anyone travelling to Saudi Arabia for Umrah.
- Travellers visiting areas where meningococcal disease is a concern.
- Individuals who require proof of vaccination to meet Saudi Arabian entry requirements.
