What is MMR?
The MMR vaccine protects against measles, mumps, and rubella, three highly contagious viral infections that can lead to serious complications. Although these diseases are included in the UK childhood vaccination programme, outbreaks continue to occur in many countries around the world.
Where are these diseases found?
Measles, mumps, and rubella occur worldwide, including in:
- Europe
- Africa
- Asia
- The Middle East
- North and South America
How are these diseases spread?
Measles, mumps, and rubella spread through:
- Coughing and sneezing.
- Close contact with an infected person.
- Touching contaminated surfaces and then touching the eyes, nose, or mouth.
Symptoms
Symptoms vary depending on the infection but may include:
- Fever.
- Rash.
- Cough.
- Runny nose.
- Red, watery eyes.
- Swollen salivary glands.
- Headache.
- Joint pain.
Prevention
The risk of measles, mumps, and rubella can be reduced by:
- Ensuring you are fully vaccinated with two doses of the MMR vaccine.
- Avoiding close contact with people who are unwell where possible.
- Practising good hand hygiene.
- Covering your mouth and nose when coughing or sneezing.
MMR vaccine
The MMR vaccine is available in the UK to help protect against measles, mumps, and rubella. It is recommended for anyone who has not received two documented doses as part of the routine vaccination programme or who is unsure of their vaccination status.
How is the vaccine given?
- The vaccine is given as an injection into the upper arm.
- A full course consists of 2 doses.
- The second dose is given at least 1 month after the first.
During your appointment, our pharmacist will review your vaccination history and advise whether you require one or two doses.
Who can receive the vaccine?
The MMR vaccine is suitable for most adults and children aged 1 year and over who are not fully vaccinated. During your appointment, our pharmacist will assess your vaccination history and determine whether the vaccine is appropriate for you.
Who should consider vaccination?
Vaccination may be appropriate for people who:
- Are travelling overseas.
- Have never received the MMR vaccine.
- Have only received one dose.
- Are unsure whether they have been fully vaccinated.
- Are travelling to countries experiencing measles outbreaks.

When to seek medical attention
Seek medical advice if you develop:
- A fever with a rash.
- Swollen glands.
- Persistent headache or neck stiffness.
- Symptoms during or after travel to an area experiencing an outbreak.
