Which pill is right for you?
There are two emergency contraceptive pills available through the NHS Pharmacy Contraception Service. Both work by delaying or stopping the release of an egg, so neither will end an existing pregnancy. Our pharmacist will talk you through both and recommend the one that suits you.
If you're sick shortly after taking either pill, come back and see us: you may need another dose. See a GP urgently, or go to A&E, if your period is more than a week late, or you get sudden, severe pain low in your stomach.
The copper coil (IUD) is the most effective emergency contraception, but it has to be fitted by a trained clinician, so we'd refer you to a specialist clinic for that. Neither pill protects you against STIs.
Sooner is better
Emergency contraception works best the sooner it's taken. Options are available up to five days afterwards, but don't wait: come in as soon as you can.
Free if you're eligible
Our pharmacist checks your eligibility for the NHS emergency contraception service during your consultation. If you're not eligible for the free service, private options are available; ask us for current pricing.

The contraceptive pill, ongoing
We're also part of the NHS Pharmacy Contraception Service, so you don't need a GP appointment to start or continue taking the pill. There are two main types: the combined pill, which contains two hormones and mainly works by stopping ovulation, and the progestogen-only pill (sometimes called the mini pill), which contains one hormone and mainly works by thickening the mucus at the entrance to the womb. Our pharmacist can help you decide which suits you.

Our pharmacist will talk you through your options and start you on a pill that suits you, without needing to see your GP first.
Already taking the pill
Whether your prescription started with your GP, a specialist clinic, or with us, we can check it's still working for you and give you your next supply.
Each visit is a short, private conversation. Our pharmacist will check your blood pressure and ask about your health, then agree the right option with you. The service is free on the NHS, and you don't need to be registered with a GP to use it.
